Food For Thought: LeBron vs. MJ in the NBA Finals

There’s been a lot of talk about LeBron James being the greatest basketball player of all-time, especially after the first three rounds of the playoffs, as well as Scottie Pippen’s comments saying that LeBron is a better overall player. I did a little research and here’s some stats that should put the bloviators in their proper place.

NBA Finals Record:
Michael Jordan: 24-11, .685 Winning Percentage , 6 NBA Titles
LeBron James: 2-6, .250 Winning Percentage, 0 NBA Titles

NBA Finals Career Averages (Through 6/7/11):
Michael Jordan: 33.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 6.0 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.66 BPG, 2.4 TO
LeBron James: 19.5 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.4 BPG, 4.6 TO

NBA Finals Points:
LeBron James: 14, 25, 25, 24, 24, 20, 17, 8
Michael Jordan: 36, 33, 29, 28, 30, 39, 39, 26, 32, 46, 33, 31, 42, 44, 55, 41, 33, 28, 29, 36, 23, 26, 22, 31, 38, 26, 22, 38, 38, 33, 37, 24, 34, 28, 45

Scoring wise, LeBron James has a high game in the NBA finals of 25. Yep, that’s it! Jordan scored 38+ points 11 times, and his low was 22 points on two occasions, better than LeBron’s average and almost as good as LBJ’s best game. Overall, James has averaged 1 rebound and half an assist more per game than Jordan, but gets crushed in every other category. Jordan averages 42% more points per game, while averaging almost identical stats in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, even though he gives up 50 lbs and 3 inches to LeBron and played the 2 spot. Not only that, but MJ had almost half as many turnovers as LeBron.

Even more incredible, look at Jordan’s first Championship appearance 20 years ago. He averaged 31.2 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and an astounding 11.4 APG over 5 games. Not only that, but he played killer defense against Magic and the Lakers, averaging 2.8 steals and 1.4 blocks per contest.

But here’s the stat that really matters: since 1990, Michael Jordan never lost another playoff series during a full NBA season. He was a winner. He got the job done. He didn’t shy away from taking the big shots, making the great pass, or playing defense until the clock read zeros. He didn’t punch his teammates’ chests with 7 minutes left like he had just discovered his new Transformers skills.

How is this chump LeBron considered the greatest anything (other than maybe actor/whiner)? Even if the Heat win this series, it will be due to the play of Dwayne Wade who has stepped his game up and played like a champion. But let’s not put the pedestrian play of LeBron James anywhere near the greatness that Michael Jordan demonstrated from his first Finals appearance all the way until his last. There’s one King, and he ain’t playing in this year’s Finals.

Great article sir.
